Ssugdae-Meori (2023)
‘Ssugdaemeori’ is creativley expressed by audio synthesizing Lim bang-wool’s voice through a vocoder in the traditional Korean pansori "Sukdaemeori" of "Chunhyang-ga".
Lim Bang-wool is a representative pansori artist of modern Korea who lived since 1904 to 1961, and he expressed the most in-depth details of human emotions despite living in turbulent times of Japenese colonial ara.
In the middle of modern Korean artists were shaken by the desire of independence and great ideoloy.
However Lim Bang-wool was focused on the emotional feeling and thinking of individuals.
The more precariously turbulent the times, the more persistently he immersed his own works in human individual emotions (especially those related to mourning). For this reason, his works contain a unique sadness and sorrowful feeling that cannot be found in any modern music.
"SSugdae meori" means a tangled hair. It is a song that Choon-hyang anxiously misses Lee Mong-ryong in prison while suffering, and the voice of Lim Bang-dong, who cries mournfully as if throwing up blood. I was used as a vocoder synthesizer to transform his voice, and through this, I try to expressing anew by lacking emotional bond or possessed. And by a continuous harmonic progression structure with the dominant chords, I want to express about the continuity and undecidedness of human conflict that cannot be resolved. The song begins to the minor chords darkly and depressingly, but after entered the dominant progression and it meet a rhythm based techno kick with a certain pattern and finally meet with a huge flow phrase, giving a big narrative.
Furthermore, I made a music video composed of modern dance. It depicts meeting, getting tangled, breaking up and anguish between conflicting humans. This led to an emotional intersection that connected the turbulent modern history with the era of Japanese colonialism, where Lim Bang-dong lived. And final scene, through the back of a human being who is exhausted from constant conflict and ends alone, the emotions of 'solitude' and 'loneliness' that exist beyond the times or era are captured in the form of a music video.
